Minecraft worlds are relatively unchanged by the forces of time, and some players wish they could have more immersion or realism while exploring. Fortunately, various season mods exist that can be installed to add time-based seasons that appear across the Overworld, changing the weather, crop growth, and even the colors of various blocks as seasons come and go.

Players can install a season mod to their copy of Minecraft: Java Edition relatively easily using a mod loader like Forge or Fabric. Once installed, players can simply drag and drop a .jar file in the appropriate location to install a season mod. As long as the mod matches the appropriate version of the mod loader and the base game, one can dive into a season mod with very little time invested.

For the sake of this guide, we'll examine how to install the Serene Seasons mod using the Fabric mod loader for Minecraft 1.20.6.

Installing Fabric

Installing Fabric can be easily accomplished both on Windows PCs as well as Mac/Linux thanks to the access of a universal .jar file. As long as players have Java installed, the universal .jar will install the mod loader automatically and they can move on to installing their preferred mods.

Players can install Fabric on their PC with the following steps:

  1. Head to the Fabric download site and click the button to download the Windows installer if you have a Windows PC. Alternatively, if you're using a different operating system or don't want to use the installer, click the link for the universal .jar.
  2. Find where you downloaded the installer/.jar and run it, ensure that the Fabric version you're installing matches your Minecraft version, then click the install button. Fabric will add the necessary folders to your game's root folder so you can install mods.

Installing Serene Seasons

Once fans have Fabric installed, installing Serene Seasons should only take a few moments. All players have to do is download the version of the mod that matches their version of Fabric and the base game, then place it in Fabric's mods folder. Players must also download a few mod dependencies, but these are also easily installed.

They can install Serene Seasons via Fabric with the following steps:

  1. Head to a site like CurseForge or Modrinth and find the Serene Seasons mod. It's also a good idea to find the same pages for GlitchCore and Fabric API as both will be needed to run the mod as intended.
  2. Check the files section on CurseForge or the featured versions on Modrinth for all three mods and download the versions of the mods for Minecraft 1.20.6, which should also match your version of Fabric. You'll receive .jar files for all three mods.
  3. Move or cut/copy and paste the three mod files into the mods folder found in the root directory of the game. Fabric should have made a mods folder when it was installed, but you can create one if you need to as well. On Windows, the default root directory for the game is C:Users/username/appdata/roaming/.minecraft while it can be found at ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft on MacOS and ~/.minecraft on Linux. Simply place the three .jar files for the mods into the mod folder and then run the game. Fabric should load the mods as needed and you can enjoy seasons to your heart's content.

Note that while these methods work for Serene Seasons, the same applications work for many other in-game season mods. However, certain season mods may only work with other mod loaders like Forge or Neo Forge, but they follow roughly the same installation instructions as Fabric.
