Duncan Fletcher as India Cricket Coach

Duncan Fletcher, the famous or infamous coach of England as you look at it, has been appointed the coach of the Indian cricket team. Fletcher takes over Gary Kirsten, who was instrumental in India doing well abroad and as key to India winning the cricket world cup after Greg Chappell left the Indian team in tatters with an awful exit in the 2007 World cup.

Gary Kirsten known for his quiet unabrasive behaviour gelled well with the top shots and the youth in the team. Fletcher on the other hand is known to be an authoritarian, thout lot of English players give credit that he has helped them immensely in their career progress. But such praise coming from folks like Marcus Trescothick, who quit international cricket due to depression , makes one think what effect Duncan will have on the Indian team which is an assembly of super stars. Old folks, that too authoritarian like Greg Chappell have not worked for India and I somehow feel it will be a simialr experience with Fletcher. Coming from a disciplined though non performing setup of English cricket to quite th opposite in India won’t be an easy job for Duncan and it has to be seen how he will gel with players here. MSD is a strong captain and is bound to be India’s captain for some time to come unless some major injury sets him back. He gelled with Gary Kirsten well, where Kirsten supported MSD’s decision making and stood with him at all times with no apparent difference of opinion visible. Can Duncan gel with MSD or will he be a disciplined dictator pulling his weight around on all decisions , we have to wait and see. Some how, Andy Flower with his flair and talent would have been a far better bet than Duncan Fletcher. Indian Cricket needs that flair to have some leeway and wont work like an English regiment.
