Asian Games: Archers win India's second gold in sensational victory

The gold drought finally ended with a stunning victory of Indian men's compound archery team over hosts Korea. Indian archers defeated current world champions South Korea by 227-225 in the finals of compound team event.

The Indian trio of Abhishek Verma, Sandeep Kumar and Rajat Chauhan, managed a total of 12 10's in 24 shots whereas the South Korean team of Yonghee Choi, Lihong Min and Youngho Yang got a total of 13 10's.

World No. 9. in men’s individual compound Rajat Chauhan and Abhishek Verma, who has also made it to the last four in men’s individual event, were in sublime form as they hit a total of 10 10’s in their combined 16 shots.

Indian team started the match on a good note as they were leading by two points at the half way stage. Third round was pretty even as both the teams managed to score 58 points out of 60.

Fortune suddenly changed in favor of the Indian team as Choi Yonghee shot a disappointing seven in the second half of the fourth end. Indian trio continued with their consistency and defeated the strong Korean team by a margin of two points.

This was the second medal in archery for the Indian team as earlier in the day Indian women’s trio of Jyoti, Purvasha Shende and Trisha Deb defeated Iran by a scoreline of 224-217 in the bronze medal match.

This is the second gold medal for India. Jitu Rai won the first gold in men’s 50m pistol shooting event a week ago.

India now with two golds,two silvers and fifteen bronze have jumped up to 11th spot. China with a total of 92 golds, 50 silvers and 39 bronze are holding the top spot whereas Korea and Japan are at second and third place respectively.
