National level junior triple jumper commits suicide for not being allowed to use mobile phone

Resnamol K S won a bronze medal at the national inter club championships

Resnamol K S, a budding athlete from the state of Kerala was found hanging in her Sports Authority of India (SAI) hostel room, after commiting suicide on Tuesday. The reason seems quite bizarre. After being reprimanded by her parents and Coach for using the phone, Resnamol decided to take her life as she was not allowed to use it.

She sold her earrings for Rs 4,020, in order to buy the phone, but was reprimanded by her Coach as hostel rules didn’t permit her to use it. Angry and saddened by her Coach, she was found hanging inside her hostel at around 11 am yesterday. Resnamol hailed from Cherupuzha in the Kannur district and joined the sports hostel last year. She was undergoing training under the District sports council.

Kalpetta sub Inspector Raman Unni said, “Resnamol’s Coach Talib came to take down the attendance of all the students at around 11 am. He attempted to open the lock, but failed to do so. He informed the warden, once the door was opened, she was found hanging there.”

The 17-year old was a budding triple-jumper and recently won a bronze medal at the National inter club Championship. Her body has been sent to the Kozhikode Medical Hospital for post mortem.

According to Resnamol’s friends, her mother had scolded her about the mobile phone on Monday, which she was very upset about. She had stayed back in her hostel room as she didn’t have any classes on the day. Some of her colleagues informed the Coach about her mobile phone, he confronted her, but received contradictory replies. Unni added, “Her mother had called Resnamol, after the Coach informed her about it. She was found dead immediately after that.”

This is not the only story from SAI centres in kerala doing the rounds. This comes immediately after, a 16-year old national junior rowing champion committed suicide in Alapuzhai in May, this year. Earlier this month, two girls from the GV Raja Sports school had consumed poision as well. Three such incidents over the past year might just prompt the state government into inspecting the existent sports schools.
