India Grand Prix Gold 2014: Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu set up marquee clash in women's singles final

India has confirmed a title in the ongoing tournament – India Grand Prix Gold 2014 – after Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu successfully cleared the semifinal hurdle in their respective clashes.

On the other side, in the men’s singles catgory, K. Srikanth’s victory in the semi-final was another delight for the Indian fans.

Here are the results from the semifinals involving Indian participation:

Men’s singles

In the first semi-final of the category, Chinese smasher Xue Song ended Aditya Prakash’s campaign. Aditya was unable to resist the agile Chinese’s attack and lost the battle 10-21, 7-21.

The second encounter was between two Indian shuttlers – Prannoy H.S. and Srikanth K. In this match, the 6th seeded Srikanth emerged winner. He defeated Prannoy 21-18, 22-20 to book his berth in the finals.

Women’s singles

The first semi-final proved to be a thrilling encounter between the top-seeded Indian Saina Nehwal and Xuan Deng of China. Saina kick-started the game with a lead and maintained it throughout. The game ended in her favour with 21-14. Xuan Deng earned a comeback win in the second game by displaying some recovering knocks in the crucial stage of the game.

The third set was more dramatic as the Indian sensation was well behind her Chinese opponent in the beginning. The score at an intermediate stage was 7-0 in favor of the Chinese. Saina then came up with some brilliant cross court smashes and began varying the pace of the rallies. Finally, the game went in favor of Saina, as she managed to defeat Xuan 21-14, 17-21, 21-19. She appeared exhausted at the end of this thriller and greeted the audience in gratitude for their support. The match lasted 80 minutes.

PV Sindhu was successful in sealing her spot for the finals after defeating her Indonesian opponent Lindaweni Fanetri. Sindhu defeated Fanetri 21-6, 12-21, 21-17 in a 62-minute battle.

Men’s doubles

Indian opportunity came to an end in the Men’s doubles category after the pair of Akshay Dewalkar and Pranaav Jerry Chopra were defeated by Chinese opposition. The Chinese pair of Li Junhui and Liu Yuchen registered a comfortable victory against the Indian pair. The Chinese pair won the match 21-18, 21-15 in a 32-minute encounter.
