Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa enter semifinals of US Open Grand Prix Gold

Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa moved into the semifinals

India’s Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa progressed through to the semifinals of the US Open Grand Prix Gold with a 21-17 21-14 quarterfinal win over the German pair of Johanna Goliszweski and Carla Nelte in 32 minutes on Friday.

Game 1 saw the German pair take an early 4-1 lead, but Gutta and Ponnappa came back into the match, by winning the next 3 points to make it 4-4. The next few points saw both pairs exchange leads until they reached a deadlock at the 8-8 mark, which was broken by the German pair, who won 2 straight points.

The next few points again saw both pairs exchanged leads until the Indian duo took the first big step in winning the game att the 14-14 mark, where they won 5 points consecutively to go 19-14 up and eventually sealed the game 21-17 in their favour.

The second game started off on a topsy-turvy note as both pairs kept pegging one another back regularly until they reached a deadlock at the 8-8 mark, from where Gutta and Ponnappa took control, first winning 2 consecutive points and following that with 6 straight points to ensure that their opponents didnt get aany chance to make any comeback and eventually won the game and the match tto move into the semis.

They will take on the Japanese pair of Ayane Kurihara and Naru Shinoya in the semis.
