Rio Olympics 2016 badminton draws: Saina Nehwal in Group G while PV Sindhu in Group M

The 2012 Olympic bronze medalist received a relatively easy draw

The badminton draws for the 2016 Rio Olympics were announced at a ceremony, held at the Rio Centro Pavillions in Brazil on Tuesday.

Jwala Gutta and Ashwini were put into Group A along with the Japanese pair of Misaki Matsutomo and Ayaka Takahashi, the Dutch pair of Selena Piek and Eefje Muskens and the Thailand pairing of Puttita Supajirakul and Taerattanachai S.

India’s Manu Attri and Sumeeth Reddy were drawn into Group D along with the second seed of Hendra Setiawan and Mohammad Ahsan of Indonesia, Chai Biao and Hong Wei of China and Kenichi Hayakava and Hiroyuki Endo.

Saina Nehwal was grouped into Group G of the draw while PV Sindhu was grouped into Group M of the draw. The former will have Maria Ulitina of Ukraine and Lohaynny Vicente of Brazil and while the latter will have Canada’s Michelle Li and Laura Sarousi in her group.

Kidambi Srikanth was grouped into Group H along with Henri Hurskeinen of Sweden and Lino Munoz of Mexico.

Among the rest of the groups, Carolina Marin was put into Group A along with Line Kjaesfeldt of Denmark and Naina Vainio. The reigning Olympic champion Li Xuerui was put into Group E along with Iris Wang and Elma Santos.

In the Men’s section, top seed Lee Chong Wei will be in Group A alongwith Derek Wong and Zhi Liang.

The badminton action at Rio begins from the 11th of August.
