The Indian Women’s Doubles duo of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa suffered a third consecutive loss at the 2016 Rio Olympics on Saturday., this time at the hands of the Thailand pairing of Puttita Supajirakul/Sapsiree Taerattanachai

The opening game saw the Indian duo begin on a positive note, as they took a 10-5 lead before losing 6 out of the next 11 points to go down 10-11 at the break. After the interval, Gutta and Ponnappa got off to a good start, winning 5 out of the next 6 points but like it was the case before the break, lost a straight of points again, losing 9 out of the next 11 points to go down 21-17.

The second game began on a poor note for the Indian pair, as they went 0-5 early on and never rally recovered after that, as the Thai duo romped home tp 15-21 second game win to end their campaign on a winning note.

The loss ends an abysmal campaign for Gutta and Ponnappa, who have now bowed out of the Olympics for a second consecutive edition.They lost their opening match to the top seeds Ayaka Takahashi/Misaki Matsutomo, in straight games lost to the Dutch pairing of Eefje Muskens and Selena Piek in three tight games yesterday and lost today in straight games as well.
