Rio Olympics 2016: PV Sindhu wins her opening group match

India's PV Sindhu cruised through her opening group match against Hungarian Laura Sarosi and won her maiden Olympic clash 21-8, 21-9 on Thursday.

Sindhu dominated right from the outset and never allowed her opponent to find any foothold in the match. Her smashes and cross court drop strokes were especially effective, as Sarosi struggled to find answers to Sindhu's class.

There were very few nerves on display and the Indian kept the pressure and dictated terms right through.

The first set was an absolute rout as the Indian kept the pressure found momentum right at the beginning and sealed it through a flurry of drop strokes and then clinched it with a cross court smash. There was absolutely no pressure exerted by the Hungarian and Sindhu had an easy outing in the first game.

Sarosi displayed grit in the second game and played few good strokes to keep Sindhu honest, but the Indian found her groove once again and played some delightful strokes to seal the set and the match. The Indian who is seeded 12th did justice to her ranking and dominated all through the encounter.

This was India's first win of the day, as both the men's and women's pair tasted defeat in their respective matches. The women's doubles team comprising Ashwini Ponnappa and Jwala Gutta were lost their match in straight games. The men's team of Manu Attri and B Sumeeth Reddy showcased fight but lost steam towards the end and lost the match 18-21, 13-21.
