2013 FIBA Americas Championship: Mexico, Argentina, Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic win

Mexico, Argentina, Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic won their respective matches on day three of the second round of the 2013 FIBA Americas Championship at Caracas. Here are the results:

Mexico 100-89 Jamaica

Hector Hernandez top scored with 25 points to help Mexico beat Jamaica 100-89. With the win Mexico now are in the third spot.

It was Jamaica that struck early by taking the first and second quarter 20-19 and 26-2 5 respectively to go to the halftime break with two point lead.

After the break, Mexico took the third and fourth quarter 25-22 and 31-21 respectively to win the match. Jerome Adolphus top scored with 24 points for Jamaica.

Argentina 89-63 Uruguay

Despite their shocking loss in the previous day, Argentina beat Uruguay to keep their hopes to enter the semi-final alive.

Luis Scola scored 17 points and Adrian Boccia scored 16 points for Argentina. Nicolas Mazzarino scored 14 points and Bruno Fitipaldo scored 13 points for Uruguay.

The first quarter finished with both teams on 24 points but Argentina took the remaining three quarters 19-11, 20-12 and 26-16 to win the match.

Dominican Republic 81-74 Canada

The Caribbean giants, who are one of the favourites to qualify for the 2014 World Cup, defeated Canada, 81-74, to stay at the second spot in the standings. Canada are in fourth place.

Canada took the first quarter 28-18 but were outscored in the remaining three quarters 16-27, 13-14 and 17-22 respectively to the Dominican Republic.

James Feldeine top scored with 20 points for Dominican Republic while Andrew Nicholson scored 29 points and grabbed 4 rebounds for Canada..

Venezuela 85-86 Puerto Rico

Leaders Puerto Rico snuck past the hosts Venezuela 86-85 in one of the most competitive matches of the second round of the championship.

The hosts took the first quarter 28-11 but the second quarter finished in a tie with both teams scoring 15 points. Puerto Rico took the third and fourth quarters 31-21 and 22-15 respectively to force the match in to overtime.

In the first overtime, Puerto Rico beat outscored their opponents 7-6 to win the match 86-85.

Donta Smith was top scorer for hosts with 26 points while Jose Juan Barea top scored with 30 points for Puerto Rico. With the win, Puerto Rico are top of the table while the hosts lie in sixth place.

Here is how things stand after day three of the second round of the championship. There is only one match left for each team in the second round.

10 teams affiliated to the FIBA Americas sub-zone are fighting for the continental honours at the 2013 FIBA Americas Championship. The top four teams qualify for the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain. The final of the championship will be played on September 11, 2013.
