Unaffected by past records, an aggressive Delhi team beat defending champions Chhattisgarh 62-59 in their Group ‘A’ league encounter. Delhi’s keen intent was evident by its statistical advantages in second chance points, offensive rebounds and points in the paint. After this win, Delhi has now joined Kerala at the top of their group with two league games still to be played.

Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra teams prosper

Both the Tamil Nadu boys’ and girls’ squads surged ahead on day three of the 64th Junior National Championship being held in Cuttack, Odisha. The boys from the south beat neighbouring Andhra Pradesh 85-41 and are now 2-1 after their first three league games. The TN girls team, on their part, put behind their tough overtime loss to Uttar Pradesh yesterday, to record a morale boosting 73-26 win over Delhi.

Maharashtra eves made short work of the local girls from Odisha. The lop-sided match saw Maharashtra opening up an unanswered 29 point lead in the first quarter alone. Maharashtra girls are now at an even 1-1 from Group B. They will next take on Punjab, which is still looking for its first win after losing to Madhya Pradesh by two points earlier in the tournament. Later in the day, Maharashtra boys made a miraculous comeback against Rajasthan after trailing by 14 points at halftime. They eventually won 72-70.

Kerala girls & Punjab boys remain undefeated

Before today’s game, Kerala and Madhya Pradesh were 2-0 and it was inevitable that one of these teams would have to surrender their undefeated record, and with it, the status of top ranked team in girls Group B.

As it turned out, Kerala dictated the game from start to finish and won by a margin in excess of 30 points. Also continuing its dream run, the star studded boys team from Punjab, featuring senior internationals Loveneet Singh Atwal and 7ft 1 inch centre Satnam Singh Bhamara, faced little trouble in beating Karnataka. “Chhattisgarh, Tamil Nadu and Delhi are our top competitors,” guard Loveneet told us after his team’s clinical performance. He also elaborated on what makes him and Satnam a formidable duo on the court.

“Satnam is the backbone of our side. Speaking about me personally, I train daily for four hours in the morning and evening with a focus on ball handling drills. My recent international exposure has brought a lot of confidence into my individual game.
