Reebok ZPump Fusion

Reebok reinvents its iconic pump sneaker- the ZPump Fusion (released on 3rd March 2015 globally). Reebok calls it a reinvention of its classic Pump shoe (Why not?). The company reimagined the Pump technology it first introduced in premium basketball sneakers more than twenty-five years ago.

No two feet are the same, every foot is unique but we still have shoes designed for a generalized foot which may in turn be uncomfortable to some users. This problem ends with Reebok ZPump Fusion. Enter the future with ZPump Fusion (or should I say, enter the future designed twenty-five years ago). This shoe adapts to you, as it pumps up and provides you with a locked-in custom fit each and every time.

The ZPump is made of just three components: the Reebok ZRated outsole, an inflatable Pump membrane that covers the midfoot, and a seamless one-piece sleeve upper. It is unlike the traditional running shoe which has over 40 components.

It is a great minimalist shoe with moderate cushioning. It feels a lot like Nike Free Flyknit but is much better in comfort, overall fit, and feel. Compression sleeves that comprise the upper of this shoe are of premium quality. It has a Fusion sleeve. The Fusion sleeve is a four-way stretch sleeve that holds together the key components of the ZPump Fusion. The fabric is very comfortable and feels like it can be worn without socks which is certainly a plus compared with Nike’s Flyknit and Adidas Mesh uppers.

The cushioning in the ZPump Fusion comes from the amazingly comfortable insole. This is one of the best available non-gel insole. On the downside, after an hour or two of usage, the insole stays compressed and offers almost zero cushioning. At this point the foot comes in contact with the not so soft outsole of the ZPump. The outsole on the ZPump Fusion is incredibly firm (called ZRated outsole, inspired by ZRated tires), offers great traction and is extremely durable. The edges and the underfoot groves provide great handling capabilities. When running at speeds though, the outsole feels just like a brick underneath your feet. The firm rubber at the heel of the outsole makes it a pain for heel strikers.

Reebok took a new approach to the Pump mechanism. The revolutionary air-filled cage is lightweight and is fully customizable. A new air bladder gives the shoe support and shape when inflated.

The Reebok ZPump is not a shoe for serious runners. It has a great fit and comfort but the brick outsole is just uncomfortable for long runs. It is a great casual shoe though.

Reebok ZPump Fusion is priced at 15,000 INR and is available at major online sellers and reebok outlets.

Well, what can I say? ‘The 90’s are back.’
