Asian Games silver medal-winning Indian pugilist fails dope test, Pro boxing title defense by Indian boxer

Manpreet is awaiting the results of his second test

Indian pugilist Manpreet Singh (+91 Kg), who won a silver medal in the 2010 Asian Games, has failed a drug test administered by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA). However, he is free to compete after he sought a sample ‘B’ analysis, according to NDTVSports.

A member of the Services Sports Control Board (SSCB), Manpreet Singh is currently competing in the Military World Games in progress in Myungyeong, South Korea. He is eligible to compete until the conclusions of the second dope test are revealed.

A source in the training facility of SSCB boxers, the Army Sports Institute said, “Yes, he has failed a NADA dope test and it was because of a cough syrup that he was taking for a recent ailment. As per the NADA report, he is free to compete as he has sought a B sample test. But it is his call whether he wants to because if the B sample also comes positive than his performance in the Games would count for nothing.”

Singh, a former National Champion, has never been found guilty of doping in the past. Another source had the following to say, “It seems to be a case of accidental intake because he does not have that kind of track record. The banned substance was in the cough syrup and he seems to have consumed it without knowing.”

NEERAJ GOYAT AND DILBAG SINGH TO COMPETE IN PROFESSIONAL BOUTS

With all the fanfare surrounding Indian boxing star Vijender Singh’s professional debut, it is no wonder that the name ‘Neeraj Goyat’ doesn’t surface. He holds the WBC Asian welterweight belt, which he is set to defend tomorrow, in a six-round fight, against 30-bout Filipino veteran Ronnel Esparas, according to NDTVSports. The fight will take place in Incheon, Korea.

Another Indian boxer, Dilbag Singh, will take on Rocky Alap Alap, who is sixteen pro bouts old, in a six-round match in the super lightweight division. Dilbag won a bronze medal in the 2010 Commomwealth Games.

Singh had the following to say about his upcoming fight, “This will be my second pro bout and my first six-round bout and I am sure that I will win it. After my debut fight in Delhi, I was working really hard and especially worked on the endurance part as this will be my first longer version.”

Goyat captured the belt in a twelve-round bout held in Delhi, earlier this year, and is optimistic ahead of his ninth professional bout. Commenting on the upcoming fight, Neeraj said, “For the last two years, I am training for professional fights, so I am quite satisfied with my training for this bout.”
