Asian Games 2014: Vikas Krishan settles for bronze in middleweight boxing category

Vikas Krishan

Good start squandered

Indian boxer Vikas Krishan settled for the bronze after losing his middleweight (75 kg category) semifinal against another Kazakhstan pugilist Alimkhanuly Zhanibek at the Seonhak Gymnasium on Thursday. Vikas, who won the gold at the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games in the 60 kg category, started on a promising note taking control of the first round as two of the three judges rules the round in his favour. But the Kazakhstan pugilist came back strongly in the second round with a flurry of punches to finish on a robust note as he managed to win over two of the three judges.

Vikas, who replaced iconic boxer Vijender Singh in the middleweight category at the Incheon Asian Games after the latter pulled out of the Asiad owing to a hand injury sustained at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, ran out of steam in the third round as Zhanibek won the ruling of all three judges to march into the final.

Other results

Earlier, Satish Kumar settled for bronze in the super heavyweight category (+91 kg) after he was defeated comprehensively in the semifinals by another Kazakhstan opponent - Dychko Ivan. The 25-year-old Indian pugilist struggled to stay competitive against the Kazakh, who showed his finesse to see all the three judges rule the first round in his favour.

Wearing the right attire, Satish needed a strong second round to harbour hopes of playing in the gold medal bout, but it was not to be easy as Dychko grew in confidence and dominated proceedings in that round. Going into the third and final, while the Kazakh was poised for a final berth, the Indian needed a knockout to push for a final spot. There was no let up in Dychko’s intensity as all the three judges again rules in his favour for the third time, which confirmed the tournament exit door of Satish. Thus, the Indian finished their campaign with two bronze medals.

Star boxer MC Mary Kom defeated Shekerbekova Zhaina of Kazakhstan in the women’s flyweight final (48-51 kg) to give India’s seventh gold medal. Two other women boxers – L Sarita Devi and Pooja Rani bagged a bronze.
