Asian Games: Mary Kom enters final with a bang

Mary Kom

India’s star boxer MC Mary Kom stormed into the final of the women’s flyweight category (48-51-kg) prevailing over Vietnam’s Le Thi Bang at the Seonhak Gymnasium. The 31-year-old Indian pugilist was aggressive from the outset and offered her opponent little chance of gaining the upperhand. Mary took the opening round easily with all the three judges ruling in her favour.

The 2012 London Olympics bronze medallist and five time world champion wearing the blue attire, maintained her dominance earning the favour of all the judges in the second round. Le had a tough job going into the third and final round and only a knockout would have saved her, but Mary was in no mood to relent engaging in punches as the two of the three judges ruled in her favour.

The Indian will play Zhaina Shekerbekova of Kazakhstan for the gold medal on Wednesday at 11:30 am (IST). Mary had earlier put it across China’s Si Haijuan in the quarterfinals. She had launched her Asian Games campaign with a triumph over Korea’s Kim Yeji.

Two other women boxers – L Sarita Devi (lightweight) and Pooja Rani (middleweight) – will also feature in the women’s quarterfinals.

Earlier on Monday, the Indian men’s boxing contingent suffered casualties in the quarterfinal stage with Gautam Bhiduri (flyweight), 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games silver medallist Mandeep Jangra (welterweight) and Kuldeep Singh (light heavyweight).

Indian men’s boxing fortunes rest on Laishram Devendro Singh (light weight category), Shiva Thapa (bantamweight) and Vikas Krishnan (middleweight) who all feature in the men’s quarterfinals.

Satish Kumar is the lone boxer who is yet to launch his campaign – he will fight in the super heavyweight category (+91-kg) on Tuesday having got a bye into the quarterfinals.
