So near yet so far. This is the story of Indian contingent in the Singapore Summer Youth Olympic Games 2010. In the inaugural edition of youth olympics Indians faired well but failed to bag any gold medal. As many as five Indians won silvers till today, losing narrowly in the final round, and to that list was added the name of bantamweight boxer Shiva Thapa today. Shiva Thapa lost the final bout to Robeisy Eloy Ramirez of Cuba by a scoreline of 5-2. Thapa got a bye in the first round and won the semifinal bout against Zack Davies by 14-4. The other boxer from India, Vikash Krishnan won bronze in the lightwaeight category.

Among others, shooter Neha Milind Sapte qualified for the final round of junior women’s 10m air rifle with seventh position in the qualifier. In the final round Neha shot 495.7 points to be fifth in the list. Korean Dowon Go won the gold with a score of 500.1.
Indian Table Tennis pair of Avik Das and Mallika Bhandarkar won their last two matches in the second stage B of mixed table tennis event. They defeated New Zealand 2-1 and intercontinental4 2-0.
Youth Olympic Games
Indian judoka Subhash Yadav was in the Barcelona team in the innovative mixed team event of judo here. Barcelona lost in the first round to Osaka 3-5. However, the other Indian here, Neha Thakur, was the member of the Cairo team who won a bronze in the tournament. Cairo defeated Birmingham and Hamilton before losing to Essen in the final of table A. Essen went on to win the gold medal defeating Belgrade, who had earlier defeated Tokyo in the final of group B.
This brings to the end of Indian campaign in the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore. Of 32 participants from the Indian contingent, 8 are going back with medals and all others with some invaluable experience. The Games get over tomorrow with just three more gold medal matches to be held- table tennis, men’s volleyball and women’s volleyball. China is steps ahead of other teams with 50 medals so far, among which 29 are gold, 16 silver and5 bronze. Russia (18-14-11) and South Korea (11-2-5) follow at the next two positions. India has 6 silver and 2 bronze medal and stand 54th in the medal tally.
