Shiva Thapa enters the quarterfinals of the World Boxing Championships

World No. 6 and 4th seeded Shiva Thapa (56kg) entered the quarterfinals of the World Boxing Championships after defeating Alberto Melian of Argentina 2-1 in the third round.

It was a very tough bout as both the boxers were giving their best to destroy the other but it was the Indian boxer, who eventually prevailed over the higher experienced opponent.

Thapa, a former Youth Olympics silver medalist lost the first round 28-29 but then made a strong comeback to win the next round 29-28 and then completely outclassed the Argentinian in the third round.

Thapa won 2-1 in the overall analysis with the round-by-round break-up being 28-29 29-28 30-27. Thapa will next take on Chalabiyev Javid of Azerbaijan in the last 8. This bout will take place on Wednesday. Thapa is just one round away from assuring India of a medal.

There was a bit of disappointment in the Indian camp as Thokchom Nanao Singh (46-49kg) lost his bout to the 8th seed Anthony Rivera Chacon of Puerto Rico 3-0 in the round of 16. The individual scoreline read 27-30, 28-29,28-29 in favor of Puerto Rico’s boxer.

In the evening session two Indian boxers will be in action. In 64 kg London Olympic quarterfinalist Manoj Kumar will lock horns with the Canadian boxer Yves Ulysse for the place in the last 8. Later on Manpreet Singh will battle out with the London Olympics Bronze medalist and current World No. 1 Teymur Mammadov of Azerbaijan.

Due to the provisional suspension that has been imposed on the Indian Boxing Federation, the country’s pugilists are competing in the Championships under the banner of International Boxing Association (AIBA).
