Chennai: Indian senior team beat Chile 15.56-4.44 VPs in the dÓrsi trophy event to regain the winning touch as six rounds ended in the HCL – 42nd World Bridge Team championship at the ITC Grand Chola here on Monday. The seniors are now placed eighth on the ranking list.

However in the Bermuda bowl, the India’s victory march was stopped by China in the sixth round. India lost 4.44-15.56 VPs and slipped to 10th place.

In the Venice cup India’s misery continued when the women losing to Jordan 2.28-17.72 VPs. The team is now just one step above the bottom rank of 22.

Earlier at the end of five rounds the going seemed good for India overall. In the Bermuda Bowl event, India defeated New Zealand on a convincing note at 16.58-3.42 VPs in the fourth round and then ousted UAE 18.87-1.13 VPs with another outstanding show. The end result was that India had pushed itself upfront to fourth place and nursing hopes of a quarterfinal berth even if these are early days.

The optimism stems from the way the team (Sumit Mukherjee, Debabrata Majumdar, Gopinath Manna, Subir Majumder, Amarnath Banerjee and Rana Roy) has been combining to fruitful ends.

The seniors on the other hand had mixed luck earlier. The pair of M. Sunil and R. Krishnan (East-West), as also Badal Chandra Das and Aloke Sadhu (North –South) had a close win over USA 2 (10.91-9.09 VPs). The 16-board game saw fluctuations in lead until the Indians held on in the end.

In the next round, however, emerging force China proved its potential. The Indian foursome of Ashok Kumar Goel and K.R. Venkataraman (open room) and Aloke Sadhu and Badal Chandra Das (closed room) did well to bridge the gap after the rivals ran away with a good lead. India are in the 8th place at the end of the fifth round.

The women in the Venice Cup event continued to struggle. The day’s losses for them included against Japan (2.28-17.72 VPs) and then even if the fare was slightly better against Brazil (6.25-13.75VPs) to remain in 20th position.
