Babies of the Karnataka Premier League, owner Umapathy and his team Namma Shivamogga, led by India allrounder Stuart Binny will take their bow on the inaugural day of the Karbonn Smart KPL 2015. The ‘New Team on the Block’ will take on title defenders Mysuru Warriors in the first contest under lights.
Umapathy has proved that what he lacks by way of experience he has made up with quality. Roping in the services of current Karnataka ‘A’ coach, G.K. Anil Kumar as the Head Coach has been a superlative effort by the team owner. GK, as he is called, has the experience of coaching age group teams for the state over the years and he made that knowledge count at the Auction Table.
Having decided to build a young team, they zeroed in on Indian all-rounder Stuart Binny to lead their pack, paying the highest of 5.5 lakhs for his services. They then bagged leg-spinning batsman Shreyas Gopal, opted for Sadiq Kirmani as wicket keeper and also landed left arm orthodox bowler Abrar Kazi from Pool ‘A’.
They backed Mir Kaunian Abbas by paying a healthy 2.15 lakhs for his services, bought Mysuru medium pacer Aditya B Sagar, went after Bhavesh Gulecha, Dinesh Borwankar.
They then picked up players who could fit into their scheme of things spending 19.25 lakhs off their allotted 20 lakhs kitty.
Players the franchise picked to complete the team are mostly those who have turned out for the state in the age-group tournaments. KV Sidharth, Samarth Ooty, catchment area players Vikram Venkatesh and Hoysala have all played Karnataka U-23 while Vijaykumar, Daivik Vishwanath and Milind Ramesh have donned theU-19 cap.
While Shivamogga might not look threatening to the opposition, the team as a whole is more than capable of upsetting the Apple Cart of the best on their day!
Not surprisingly, this is the only team in the competition that can boast of three players with famous Cricketing Fathers. G.R. Vishwanath’s son Daivik, Syed Kirmani’s son Sadiq and Roger Binny’s son Stuart!
