Mumbai, June 25 (IANS) Mumbai's renowned Dr H.D. Kanga Memorial Cricket League will begin on August 2 and run till October 25, it was announced on Thursday.

Former India skipper and ex-chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar, who is the chairman of the new Cricket Improvement Committee (CIC) of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), said the league will be played in its old format.

"Kanga League will start on August 2 and the last match will be played on October 25. The format will be same that is the old format," Vengsarkar said at a press conference here.

The league was inaugurated here in 1948 and the tournament has been played on various cricket grounds in the city without a break since then.

Many Indian cricketers have played this Mumbai premier club cricket league, before starting their International cricket career.

In 1987, Sachin Tendulkar had represented John Bright Cricket Club in the Kanga League, and later went on to play for the Cricket Club of India.

The league was named after Dr. Hormasji Dorabji Kanga, who played 43 first class cricket matches as an all-rounder, and was also a selector for the India national cricket team.
