A suburban Brisbane cricket match was subject to the strangest of interruptions on Friday, when a vengeful taxi driver drove his vehicle into the DM Henderson Park, and parked it right in the middle of the pitch as a team was about to start their innings.
The match, a Queensland Warehouse Cricket Association B1 fixture, was being played between Macgregor Cricket Club and Griffith University. During the Macgregor innings, a straight hit from Nigel Sherborne went sailing over the rope, and landed right in the middle of the windscreen of a taxi which was standing outside.
Not somebody to take the blow lying down, the cabbie decided that he would make the players feel his fury, and drove the damaged taxi into the field before Griffith could start batting.
He stayed inside his vehicle, as the players and officials tried to reason with him. Nothing could move him, however, and the Queensland Police had to be called. The driver relented after the police told him to, but eight overs of play had been lost by then.
"Nigel hit a straight drive off Tom English for six smashing into a parked cabbie," Macgregor secretary Troy Burns wrote on the club's Facebook page.
"Not happy and in protest he then drove onto the field and parked in the centre of the pitch."
It has been noted on the social media with humour that the taxi driver’s ‘straight drive’ disrupted a whole match, while it has also been pointed out that had the cab been an Uber one, the incident could have been avoided.
The event has evinced much mirth from all around, but one hopes that the aggrieved taxi driver has been finally appeased as well.
