Indian cueist Chitra Maagimairaj prospered at the World Snooker Championship as she emerged victorious over Alena Asmolova of Belarus in the senior category on Tuesday.

The debutant from Bangalore made up for her dispiriting performance in the open category last week as she convincingly beat Asmolova 57-32, 76-16, 42-9 to bag the title.

Chitra made her way to the finals by defeating several proficient players including Carmelita Yumito of Brazil and Jenny Poulter of England, both of whom she defeated 2-1.

In the semi-finals, the 41-year-old faced off against reigning national billiards champion and fellow Bangalorean Umadevi Nagraj, and Chitra won that encounter 2-0 to set up a final against Asmolova.

Chitra’s storming win has come at the best possible time for her, after she endured a disappointing run in the open category of the World Snooker Championships in the WLBSA event, where she was handed an early exit from the tournament.
