Ronnie Daruwalla shocked former world No. 7 Nalin Patel to storm into the knock out pre-quarter-finals, in the SPG-Park Club Open Billiards Handicap Tournament on Thursday.
With Hitesh Kotwani of CCI topping Group C, Daruwalla’s win was crucial in his concluding round robin tie against Patel, who later lost to Kotwani and crashed out. Patel, playing with a handicap of -600, hit a brilliant break of 147 against Kotwani in a desperate bid to stay in the competition but the effort was not enough.
World bronze medallist Ashok Shandilya and veteran Subhash Agrawal, both of Shivaji Park Gymkhana, also entered the pre-quarter-finals. Shandilya topped Group A with a win over Chandu Kansodaria of Mandpeshwar Civic Federation (MCF), Borivali. Kansodaria qualified following a crucial win over former great Prakash Rajani of Khar Gymkhana.
Subhash Agrawal qualified with Group H topper Sanjiv Bijlani of Park Club who registered back-to-back wins over Yash Rungta of Kandivli and Agrawal, who’s win over Rungta in the opening group tie proved decisive.
The others to advance to the pre-quarter-finals were, Mahesh Jagdale and Farhad Tengra, both of Elphinstone Cricket Club, and Rohan Jambusaria of MCF.
