Earlier this month, Square Enix, the publisher of Tomb Raider and Final Fantasy, had announced that that they would reveal more about its mysterious cloud gaming project, 'Flare', by holding a press conference on September 19, which is today. Square Enix calls Flare "a technology breakthrough in cloud gaming." They had explained last year that Flare is not like PlayStation Now or Onlive. Those services offer streaming games, but Flare is more focused on the cloud. According to them," Flare replaces the console with a super computer."

"Everything in current streaming games is running in its own individual instance," the company said at the time. Flare, instead, "creates one instance and shares those resources...supercomputer-like experiences are possible with Project Flare through a unique, patented, architecture that enables cost-efficient scalability and processing power through which images are streamed as video."

Today, at its press conference at the Tokyo Game Show, Square Enix has announced more details on its cloud gaming project, named Shinra technologies. It was revealed here that former Square Enix president and representative director Yoichi Wada would serve as president at Shinra technologies. It will be based in New York and will focus on developing cloud technologies. Square Enix has also partnered with Swedish developer Avalanche Studios for the project. At the event, Yoichi Wada stated that "2016 will be a key moment for cloud gaming."

The beta for Shinra Technologies is to launch early next year in Japan, and this will give players access to both new games and flagship Square Enix games, including Final Fantasy VII, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and Tomb Raider. It is expected that a North American beta will be launched sometime next year. Beta participants will also be able to manoeuvre the Agni's Philosophy technology demo in real-time, which made its debut at E3 2012.

According to Square Enix, its cloud service will differentiate itself from the competition by allowing developers to use the power of multiple servers, providing more resources for better physics and greater graphics in order to create new games.
