The Yas Marina circuit in the United Arab Emirates is one of the newer tracks in the F1 calender. Built on the island of Yas, the 5.5 km long track was designed by F1′s current favourite designer Hermannn Tilke.

A lap of the counter-clockwise running 5.5 km Yas Marina circuit takes around a minute and 40 seconds and F1 cars can reach a top speed of 315 km/hr . The track features 5 high speed stretches, 5 slow turns, 3 of which provide ideal spots for overtaking. The total distance covered in the 55 lap sequence is 305 kms.

The lap starts with the cars barrelling down the pit straight into the first which is a medium speed left hander which exerts pressure on both the car and the driver as the drivers suddenly have to shift down to third as they slingshot into a smaller straight. This second small straight leads into a set of two S-curves the first of which starts with a left handed turn which is taken in 6th gear at around 240 km/hr.

The S-curves then lead into a hairpin which opens into the back straight where cars can achieve their top speeds. The straight then closes down into the slowest corner of the track a left hander which is taken in 1st gear at around 80 km/hr. This turn then open into another right hander which the cars take at around 120 km/hr.

Another long straight follows which is followed by a left hander where drivers try their level best to brake the latest in a bid to overtake. This is followed by a rather slow chicane where speeds linger from 110 to 128 km/hr.

The circuit then moves into the slowest portion of th track in a series of slow turns that take the drivers under the Hotel inside the track at speeds as slow as 120 km/hr. The track then enters it final sets of corner – two right handers before the drivers find themselves back on the pit straight.
