FIA confirms V6 engines from 2014

The International Automobile Federation FIA has agreed to a proposal from manufacturers and race teams confirming that the sport will switch from V8 power to a newly-agreed 1.6-litre V6 turbocharged engines from the start of the 2014 season.

The FIA ??had originally planned a four-cylinder turbo engines by 2013. But a dispute erupted around this idea as teams and engine manufacturers oppose the change, which resulted in a compromise with the introduction of six-cylinder engines.

The new rules were agreed in a meeting of the Formula One Commission last week.A statement on the FIA’s website confirmed that,

“Following a fax vote by its members, the World Motor Sport Council has ratified the engine regulations recently drawn up in consultation with the main stakeholders in Formula One.”

“The new power plant will be a V6 1.6 turbo unit with energy recovery systems. This new formula will come into effect as from the start of the 2014 FIA Formula One World Championship season.”
