Lewis Hamilton takes a jibe at Mercedes teammate; Nico Rosberg clarifies he is "100% German"

Rosberg: “I’m 100% German”

Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg said that he is 100% German after his team mate Lewis Hamilton jokingly questioned his nationality in an interview despite both living in Monaco. Hamilton is looking for his sixth victory of the season at the German Grand Prix.

“It is always good to beat others on their home turf. It will be great to win in Germany,” said Hamilton.

“You can strike a line under the last few races,” he added after narrowing the gap to just four points. “This is a fresh start, the second half of the season and now this is really when it is going to be tough. To be honest, Nico has never actually been in Germany, so it is not really his home race.

“When I was racing in karting he didn’t stand next to a German flag ever! He always stood by Monaco and never next to Germany. I know he has grown up in Monaco, so that is his home.”

Rosberg, son of former Finnish driver Keke Rosberg who had won the German Grand Prix in 1982 refused to make a mountain out of a molehill regarding the issue.

It is a non-issue

"What do you want me to say? Everybody can judge however they want," he said, adding that he was certainly not as German as Hamilton claimed that he was English: "Not really no, because I didn't grow up in Germany...But I consider myself 100 percent German," said Rosberg.

Rosberg and Hamilton despite being team-mates are not the best of friends off the circuit. The 29 year old German leads the Brit by 4 points in the Drivers’ Championship. Mercedes is leading the Constructors’ championship with 326 points well ahead of Red Bull Racing’s 168.

Rosberg had to retire with 21 laps left due to a technical flaw in his car’s gearbox at Silverstone. Both will now head to Hockenheim, where Hamilton will look to regain the lead.

“The British crowd has been brilliant this week and, even though they were cheering for Lewis, they showed a lot of respect for me and it was great to see the fantastic atmosphere they brought over the whole weekend," said Rosberg.

"I'm now looking forward to taking our dominant Silver Arrow to Germany and racing at Hockenheim," said the 29 year old.
