Red Bull welcomes Pirelli tyre changes

Red Bull racing Team Principal Christian Horner has welcomed Pirelli’s decision to change their tyres before next month’s Canadian GP.

The move came after the F1 tyre supplier’s reputation had taken a beating following the extreme tyre degradation issues faced by teams, including Mercedes and Red Bull, at the Spanish GP last week which had led to Red Bull racing owner Dietrich Mateschit blasting the Italian tyre maker, stating that their tyres were making F1 a ‘tyre management competition’ rather than a racing competition.

The changes, however have led to concerns that the move will play into the hands of Red Bull and its defending Triple World Champion. Horner, though, stated these concerns were invalid as he insisted that it would be impossible to predict how the change would affect the sport. Horner added that the change had to be made in the “interests of good racing.”

“We have always been very consistent about the situation with the tyres from the first race,” added the team boss. “We have won two of the races and are in a good position in the Championship, but it is too much about tyres at the moment and not about racing. It is ultimately in Pirelli’s interests. They are a big enough company and have a good enough understanding to rectify the issue. It will be in the interests of good racing over the next few grand prix.”
