5 reasons why Spurs could win the Premier League this season?

The Premier League has begun and three rounds of matches have already been played as we can start to realise how things are going to end up by the time the season ends. The deadline day of the transfer window further reinforced the status of early favourites on some clubs.

And Tottenham Hotspur are one such team.

The North London outfit finished an impressive second last term and are looking to build upon it this season by going all the way to win the title – and they do have the ability to do so. While Jose Mourinho might be famous for always winning the league in his second season, it feels as though the Lilywhites might break that famous streak of the Portuguese.

And here are 5 reasons why Spurs will win the league this season:

#5 Best starting line-up in England

With Manchester United and Manchester City redeveloping their squad with some great signings, Tottenham’s starting XI still oozes the impression that it is a little superior over the two. The North London side haven’t tampered much with the first-team, except for a few signings that don’t really alter much of the starting XI – which keeps their chemistry and balance intact.

Tottenham’s defence is perhaps the best in the league. Last season, they conceded the fewest goals in the league – even less than eventual champions, Chelsea. And they have actually further updated that defence with astute signings (more on that later, obviously).

Their midfield might not be the most creative, but their attack is up there against the best in the league. Last season, Spurs had three different players scoring 20 or more goals, respectively, in the form of Dele Alli, Heung-Min Son and, obviously, Harry Kane.

And now they have added the World Cup-winning Basque forward, Fernando Llorente, in their ranks.

#4 Harmonious squad

Spurs have a united squad - no pun intended

One of the things that you notice about this Tottenham side is how harmonious it has been under the tutelage of Mauricio Pochettino. Each and every player in the team has developed together and know exactly what their team-mates expect from them.

Moreover, the fact that they have been playing together for a while and within the same footballing ethos that the former Espanyol boss echoes through his system has helped them improve their on-field understanding.

There are often moments when the Lilywhites look absolutely unstoppable while playing mesmerising football, something which is only possible if there is a superior level of chemistry present in the members of the team.

And with another year of playing together, it can only get better.

#3 Laws of improvement

In his first season with the club, Mauricio Pochettino oversaw Spurs to a fifth-place finish in the Premier League. In his second season, the Lilywhites were mainly the only challengers to surprising league-leaders, Leicester City, for most of the season, but saw a late-season implosion to finish third behind Arsenal and eventual champions, Leicester City.

And last season, which was the former Argentina international’s third with the Londoners, Tottenham Hotspur finished second – which was their best ever in terms of points accumulated. So, if the law of improvement is taken under consideration, then there is a good chance that Spurs will win the league to complete their all-round improvement under Mauricio Pochettino.

From fifth to first, it would not be a bad title for a movie, would it?!

#2 New signings

Ivorian right-back Serge Aurier recently joined the ranks of Tottenham Hotspur

For the first six weeks of the summer transfer window, the North London club were as quiet in the transfer market as some politicians are when they are asked to comment on a morally complicated situation.

The fans were absolutely losing their wits at their club’s lack of activity in the market, but Spurs ended with a bang after they signed 5 players to round off their summer in the best way possible. They replaced Kyle Walker with a better right-back in Serge Aurier, bought two of the most talented defensive prospects – Davinson Sanchez and Juan Foyth, to further strengthen their already-best defence, and have finally signed the proper backup for Harry Kane in the form of Fernando Llorente.

Added to that, they have promoted highly talented Marcus Edwards to the first-team while also having Harry Winks knocking on the door for a while. These two might be academy players, but they also give the impression of new signings that are going to help the team this season.

#1 Mauricio Pochettino

Pochettino has engineered Spurs into a well-oiled machine

And the biggest reason for us to believe that the North London club are going to win the Premier League is the Argentine manager, Mauricio Pochettino. Ever since he took over the club three years ago, Spurs have seen a rise in their fortunes.

The former Espanyol man has engineered Spurs from mid-table mediocrity to genuine title-contenders. The fact that Spurs have been able to hold their best players while also signing some quality players that were being scouted by other top and richer European clubs is a testament to the appeal that Pochettino exudes.

Players want to play and win under him – it is for this reason that the likes of Harry Kane and Dele Alli are still at the club. Despite what Danny Rose believes, Pochettino’s influence in the team can’t be denied and one gets the impression that he isn’t going to leave Spurs without winning a major trophy – and the Premier League title of 2017-18 could be just that.
