Arsenal Transfer News: Gunners Interested in MLS Central Defender

According to New York Times, Arsenal are interested in MLS Club New York Red Bull’s Center Back Tim Ream.

Arsenal fans must be aware of New York Red Bull football (soccer) team as Gunner legend Thiery Henry currently plays for them. Ream, a 23 year old US International, helped his team to a surprise Emirates Cup victory earlier this month and also featured in MLS All Star team that faced Manchester United in the Red Devil’s preseason tour of USA.

Tim Ream

Erik Soler, the Red Bulls’ general manager and sporting director, said last Saturday night:

“They [Arsenal] are following Tim regularly and have done for a while, and they have told me the same. We have not had an offer for Tim, and my personal opinion is that he should stay here this season and next. It would be good for him.”

Ream is rated very highly back in States and Red Bulls Coach Hans Backe once compared him to Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand.

The player himself admitted that he had been made aware of Arsenal’s interest by M.L.S. officials.

“Whether it’s Arsenal or any other team, top teams want young guys. At the end of the day, teams look for experienced center backs. You never know. Doors are always opening and closing, but there’s always another door opening.”

Ream, who used to play for Chicago Fire Premier before joining Red Bulls in 2010, also participated in the recently concluded 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

The player will hardly cost Arsenal a meager $2-3M at max. Arsene still not ready to splurge out cash, eh?
