Barcelona-B captain Alex Grimaldo unhappy with Luis Enrique

Alejandro ‘Alex’ Grimaldo is unhappy with Luis Enrique for not picking him in the first team

The captain of Barcelona B team, Alejandro Grimaldo has raised questions on Luis Enrique’s approach to the B-team players. The reserve team of FC Barcelona currently plays in Segunda División B, Spain’s third division, having been relegated last season.

Grimaldo joined FC Barcelona's youth system in 2008, aged 13. The left back was talking to radio station RAC1 where he openly criticised Luis Enrique for not giving the reserves the attention they deserved. He said that a relationship between him and Lucho (Luis Enrique) was non-existent.

“He has never told me anything,” Grimaldo said. “I have not had any contact with him, nor do I have anything to say to him.

“I work with my coach [Gerard Lopez]. I get on well with him, he helps me with everything and he helps me better.

“Let him be with his players higher up and let me be with my team,” he said.

Luis Enrique during his Barcelona-B days

When Jordi Alba suffered a neck injury back in September, Jeremy Mathieu was played even though he prefers a central defensive role. Grimaldo starred for Barcelona B last season where he made 36 appearances and scored four goals, but Enrique paid no heed to his candidature, leaving utility man Adriano Correia as the most natural cover for Alba. Grimaldo has also played internationally at the U19 level.

Luis Enrique started his managerial career with Barcelona B, renamed Barcelona Atlètic for that season, in 2008. He went on to manage Roma and Celta Vigo before coming back to Barcelona as the manager of senior team.

Fans are of the opinion that the manager should give the youngster a chance in the senior team as it will be a waste of Grimaldo's talent if Barcelona keep finding themselves in a situation where they are unable to offer him a place in the first team of the club. They fear that he may even move on to a club where he will be respected and be given a fair chance to prove his worth.
