Barcelona to drop home kit for Catalan colours against Athletic Blibao this weekend

Barcelona will wear the Catalan colours at home for the first time in their 115-year history

Barcelona will wear the Senyara shirt for the first time ever at Nou Camp against Athletic Bilbao this weekend. The yellow and red kit will feature the Catalonia flag, the Senyera – a move that is intended to provide an indirect support to the Catalan inpendence movement.

Thursday marked the National day of Catalonia and this will be the first time in the club history that the players will wear the flag colours in a home game.

Earlier yesterday, Gerard Pique also participated in the Catalan independence march. The Catalan born defender later posted this picture on twitter:

However, the club statement denied any political agenda behind this move:

“FC Barcelona’s first team have been given permission by the LFP to wear their “senyera” kit against Athletic Bilbao on Saturday afternoon at the Camp Nou.

The Club’s Board of Directors had requested the change in strip, which features a design based on the Catalan flag, as part of the commemorations to mark the three hundredth anniversary of the September 11 siege of Barcelona in 1714.“
