David Beckham insists Manchester United will never have a drought like Liverpool

David Beckham won 6 Premier League titles during his time at Old Trafford

David Beckham has insisted that his former side Manchester United will never flop like Liverpool and go decades without a Premier League trophy, as per the reports on ESPN. The last time their fiercest rivals from the Merseyside won the league title was back in 1990.

United surpassed Liverpool’s record of winning the most league titles in 2013 when Sir Alex Ferguson announced his retirement. Ten years after Beckham left Old Trafford, the Red Devils became the most successful team in England by winning their 20th league title.

The season after the Scot’s retirement, United struggled under David Moyes who secured 7th place for the club in the 2013/14 campaign. Many were calling for Moyes’ head after a disappointing season and Dutch coach Louis van Gaal succeeded him at Old Trafford the following year. The former Barcelona coach hasn’t fulfilled the expectations set at the club, but he took the Manchester club back into the Champions League this season.

Two years ago, Liverpool came close to narrowing the gap between the two clubs, but Steven Gerrard’s untimely slip and defeat to Chelsea at Anfield was enough for Manchester City to win the title in 2014. The mighty Reds have now gone 25 years without lifting the trophy in the domestic arena. Many fear that United are on the verge of following their rivals’ footsteps, but Beckham has insisted it will not be the same at Old Trafford.

"I can't see that happening to Manchester United,'' Beckham said.

"I never think that we will not be in contention for winning trophies because there is too much history, there is too much embedded into this club to let it just slip away like that.''

Standards are always set high at Old Trafford: Beckham

United have gone through this phase before with Ferguson and the former Real Madrid star believes the current crop of players are capable of turning it around.

"We have been spoiled over the last 20 years,'' said Beckham, who graduated from the club's famed academy.

"We have been so successful and then the manager and [former chief executive] David Gill leave, then there is a number of players that retired like Scholesy and Giggsy.”

"No matter what club it is, no matter how much money you have behind you, there is going to be a dip in trophies, but unfortunately when you are Manchester United, you can't really have that and there are tough moments.''

Beckham’s former side suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat to Arsenal this weekend and they have lost their top spot in the league table to cross-town rivals Manchester City.
