It isn’t like Borussia Dormund already didn’t have problems, and now to top that off, add the injury of their best player Marco Reus yet again who had to be taken off in a stretcher during Dortmund’s 2-2 draw with SC Paderborn 97 on Saturday. The 25-year-old was brought down by a rough challenge by former BVB player Marvin Bakalorz in the 64th minute of the game. Bakalorz was issued a yellow card but the damage was already done for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Borussia Dortmund are currently 15th in the Bundesliga league table, just a point above the relegation play-off spot.

Club Statement

The club confirmed Reus’ diagonosis after he was taken to a hospital via their official website:

“BVB sporting director Michael Zorc said after the match that Reus could have sustained a lateral ankle ligament rupture, with the syndesmosis also looking to be damaged, according to our doctor’s initial diagnosis.”

“Five months ago, in an international friendly for Germany against Armenia, Reus suffered a partial ligament tear in his left ankle which ruled him out of the World Cup. This time, it’s the other foot, which, according to BVB coach Jürgen Klopp, “makes it even worse. His ankle has swollen up badly.”

The duration of his recovery period is not confirmed yet.

Klopp’s reaction

Manager Klopp was rightly frustated with this setback and express his dissapointed during a post-match interview.

“I can’t find another word for it,” said the Dortmund coach. “There are situations where he makes sliding tackles without any control whatsoever. I used to tell him that he shouldn’t do that. Marvin is a great lad, but that was just too much.”
