Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has come out and stated that English football has a big problem with youngsters being paid huge salaries.

He sounded out a warning saying young British players are unable to fulfill their potential thanks to the five-to-six figure sums they pocket every week.

Rodgers said: “It's a big problem with British players. Why? Because the reward is no longer there, they lose their hunger. Young players driving about, I say driving about, they buy a new Range Rover Sports before they have even got their driving licence.”

Many young English talents have failed to impress when they make it to the Premier League and Rodgers has an explanation for that.

“Over half the world watch the Premier League, and our young players get carried away, then they wonder why their careers fall away.”

Liverpool will be careful with Sterling: Rodgers

The Reds boss also said they would look after Raheem Sterling after an impressive season in 2013-14, culminating in a World Cup spot in the England national team. Rodgers is looking to tie him down to the club with a contract extension.

“It will be something that's done, but we need to be careful.”

“Raheem is a kid who has propelled himself on to another level. He got rewarded for that, and that will always be the case here. But we have to be careful because when you reward young players too quickly, that will be their downfall.”
