Tottenham’s new signing Erik Lamela suffered a big scare on the eve of his debut after his brother, Axel, was kidnapped by armed carjackers near Buenos Aires.

Axel was kidnapped just hours before Tottenham’s Premiere League clash against Norwich and the kidnappers ordered for a ransom of £550 which was eventually given by Lamela’s parents.

The kidnappers demanded the ransom through phone and Axel was released immediately after the amount was given. However, his BMW was stolen as part of the attack.

Erik and Axel’s older brother, Brian Lamela confirmed that the kidnap was not because of the fame of the football star but simply because of the expensive car Axel was driving.

“They told us to get the ransom money and make sure the police were not involved. They came to our front door to collect the money. They did not cover their faces and the security cameras at our house recorded them. My brother is calm. All of us think it was a random incident — they simply kidnapped him for the car and nothing else,” he said.

Lamela, who signed for Tottenham for a club record deal of £30 million made his debut as a substitute coming on with just seven minutes left on the clock.
