David Beckham targets Lionel Messi for Miami United

Lionel Messi
Messi is a long-term target for the MLS side

Former Manchester United, AC Milan, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain star David Beckham is preparing for the launch of his own Major League Soccer team in Miami with hopes of signing one of the best players in the world.

Miami United FC, the former England international’s MLS side will play at Flamingo Park which is located in Miami Beach, Florida and expects to have it running by the 2017 season. Beckham believes that bringing Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi to his United side would be the route to success for the team.

The reason for targeting Messi, apart from him being the arguably the best player in the world seems to be hinging on the fact that Miami has a huge Latin population, which makes the Argentine striker one of the most popular faces for the people from that region.

Beckham’s MLS past

Beckham had played in the MLS for the LA Galaxy for five seasons and was the marquee signing for the Los Angeles side. The former England international knows the value of bringing a top player to the side and he has plans to bring in other superstars to Miami.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is another player that Beckham has earmarked for a move to Miami, especially considering that his contract at PSG runs out at the end of the season. Zlatan and Beckham had played alongside one another for the Ligue 1 club and that relationship could help clinch the deal for the MLS side.

Messi however is the player that Beckham wants the most for his side and he is prepared to do all that it takes to bring the Argentine to Miami. However, the likelihood of this deal taking place coinciding with the launch of the MLS side does seem to be extremely remote.

The Barcelona star is one of the greatest players to have ever graced the game of football and bringing him to Miami United is one of Beckham’s goals for the long run. Messi currently is one of the most important players for Barcelona and is set for another season of trophies and medals with the Catalan club.

Barcelona are eight points clear of second placed Atletico Madrid in the La Liga standings and hold a 2-0 lead over Arsenal in their UEFA Champions League knockout tie. They also face Sevilla in the Copa del Rey, and are looking to defend all these three titles this season.
