Manchester United keeper David De Gea plays down the rumours of dressing room unrest

De Gea hopes United can win silverware this season

Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea has rejected the suggestion that there is unrest in the United dressing room, while also claiming that club skipper Wayne Rooney is the one to encourage them when things are not going well. The Spaniard also stated that he feels he is in the best physical condition of his career and vowed to improve his performances in the future.

Speaking to the Manchester United’s official magazine, Inside United, the Spanish shot-stopper said, “There's a great atmosphere. The dressing room is very together and united. They are a great set of lads and we're all very happy with the group of players that we have. I think that's really important in a team if it wants to achieve big things.”

De Gea was upbeat about the club’s chances to win silverware this season and feels that the team can push for the title and revealed that they are aiming to be in a position to win the league come April.

“This league is very tough to win and there will be a number of teams who will be in the shake-up for the title.”

“That's what we all want, to stay up near the top, and to get to April and be in a position where we can win the league. That's what we're going to try to make happen.”

The 25-year is optimistic that United can win silverware this term and hopes that injuries do not disturb the team’s composition and form later in the season. Though the Red Devils are out of the UEFA Champions League and the Capital One Cup, they still remain in contention for the Premier League, the FA Cup and the Europa League.

“That’s what we all want to do, win trophies… that’s fine, but we have to wait and see what happens and if there are any injuries and if things go well for us. Let’s hope we can win something.”

Rooney is an ideal captain

The United shot-stopper was particularly effusive about the impact of skipper Wayne Rooney on the players, both on and off the field. He termed the England captain as a great player who deserves to have his name in the record books. The 30-year-old became England’s all-time highest goal-scorer in September after he broke Sir Bobby Charlton’s record of 49 goals by scoring his 50th goal with a penalty against Switzerland.

“As our captain he has a big personality. He always tries to motivate us. When things are going badly it's always him who speaks up and encourages us," the keeper said.

“He's breaking all kinds of records for goals scored and games played and I reckon he deserves it as he is such a great player.

“And he's the same off the field. He's the club captain and he's the one who has to do the talking and motivate us. That's what he always does.”
