Luis Suarez eats ball

Former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan has revealed that he tried to convince compatriot Luis Suarez to sign for the Red Devils, report theLiverpool ECHO.

The Uruguayan veteran spent three unsuccessful season at Old Trafford earlier in his career and partnered Suarez, who he counts as a close friend, at the World Cup in South Africa in 2010.

While Forlan has entered the twilight years of his career and currently plays in Japan,Suarez is the Premier League’s most lethal front man with 27 goals for the Merseysiders this season.

However, when the 27-year-old decided to leave Ajax in 2011 he had a number of clubs chasing his signature and Forlan was adamant that he should move to United.

“We’re close and we get on well. He’s polite and keen to learn, always asking me questions and for advice. I like how he feels he can turn to me in good and bad moments.

“Like when Liverpool made him an offer. Of course, I told him he should join Manchester United,” he insisted.

Despite his friends decision to join fierce rivals Liverpool against his advice, Forlan also admitted his respect for the Reds’ fans and believes Suarez is well suited to the English game despite a string of controversial incidents.

“But I also spoke well of Liverpool and their history.

“I told him how, after I’d scored for Atletico at Anfield to knock them out of the Europa League, their fans applauded me.

“He loves playing at Liverpool. He likes the Premier League – and the fans love him because he’s a striker’s striker.

“He still chases everything, like Wayne Rooney used to before he moved deeper, and he’s learned from his mistakes. We all make them,” he declared.

Luis Suarez has had 159 shots in the Premier League this season while Southampton’s Jay Rodriguez (101) is the only other player to have managed over a century. Streets ahead.
