Euro 2016 qualifiers: England maintain 100% record, Spain Switzerland book Euro berths

Man of the match Ross Barkley produced a sublime pass to help Walcott fire England into the lead

England made it nine wins out of nine Euro 2016 qualifiers with a routine win over Estonia. Switzerland joined England as the second team in the group to gain automatic qualification for the Euro championships thrashing San Marino 7-0. Meanwhile, Spain booked their ticket to France 2016 in style with a 4-0 trouncing of Luxembourg.

Friday’s round of qualifying saw Groups C, E and G in action. While automatic qualification from Group E is decided, second place is still up for grabs in Groups C and G.

Results elsewhere saw Ukraine taking a big step towards qualifying with a 2-0 away win over Macedonia with fellow group member Slovakia losing 1-0 to Belarus. Slovenia played out a 1-1 draw with Lithuania.

Sweden emerged as 2-0 victors over Liechtenstein and group leaders Austria edged out Montenegro 3-2 in a pulsating encounter. Russia maintained their push for a second place finish from their group with a 2-1 win over Moldova.

Group C

Spain sealed their qualification from the group with Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla and Valencia striker Paco Alcacer both scoring twice in Logrono as they beat Luxembourg 4-0. It was a comfortable win with Iker Casillas, who started ahead of David de Gea, having very little to do throughout. However, injuries Manchester City’s David Silva and forward Alvaro Morata spoiled Spain’s celebrations.

Behind them is the battle between Slovakia, who lost 1-0 to Belarus, and Ukraine, who beat Macedonia 2-0, for the second automatic spot. They both have 19 points, with Ukraine hosting Spain and Slovakia, who have the better head-to-head record, at Luxembourg in Monday's final round of games.

Group E

Roy Hodgson's side had already qualified for France next summer and even without injured captain Wayne Rooney were able to dismiss Estonia with barely an anxious moment. Rooney received a Golden Boot from Sir Bobby Charlton before kick-off after breaking his England goalscoring record. There was barely a moment of note in the first 45 minutes until man-of-the-match Ross Barkley picked out Theo Walcott with a superb pass to score with the last kick of the half. And England's latest victory was sealed in the dying moments when substitute Jamie Vardy unselfishly set up a second from close range for Raheem Sterling.

Switzerland booked their place at Euro 2016 with a 7-0 pounding of lowly San Marino. The hosts scored six second-half goals, three from the penalty spot and the celebrations started when news of Slovenia's draw with Lithuania filtered through to St Gallen. They join England as the two nations to qualify for France next summer from the group.

Russia needs a solitary point against Montenegro on Monday to secure qualification, after their 2-1 win against Moldova. They have 17 points while Sweden have 15 points after their 2-0 win at Liechtenstein. Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic missed a penalty, but also scored his 58th international goal as the Scandinavian side secured at least a play-off spot.

Group leaders Austria continued their impressive run through the qualifiers with yet another win over Montenegro. They scraped through a closely fought game 3-2 away from home.
