Euro 2016 qualifiers: Nicklas Bendtner scores twice as Denmark defeat Serbia 3-1

Denmark defeated Serbia 3-1 on Friday night to maintain their place at the top of Group I in the Euro 2016 qualifiers.

The visitors fell behind in the opening minutes of the game after Zoran Tosic put Serbia into the lead. But Denmark responded in the second half courtesy of a brace from Nicklas Bendtner and a strike from Simon Kjaer that ensured a victory for the Danes, keeping them at the top of their group with 7 points, one ahead of second place Portugal.

Tosic opened the scoring in the fourth minute with a comfortably placed shot in the right corner after he found himself totally unmarked in the opponent’s 18-yard-box. Both teams headed into the dressing room with the hosts leading 1-0 at half-time.

But a determined Denmark side picked up the pace in the second half and equalised on the hour mark through Bendtner who scored his side’s opener from a rebound of Vladimir Stojkovic. Two minutes later, Kjaer’s header put his side ahead before Bendtner rounded things off in the 85th minute, erasing any hopes of a Serbian comeback with a superbly controlled finish.
