Video: Fans shout "You're drunk" as Pique runs away from nightclub

Pique featured in Spain’s 2-0 win over Slovakia in their Euro qualification match

FC Barcelona defender Gerard Pique was seen hurrying towards his car from a nightclub in Gijon he exited as fans shouted “you’re drunk.”

The Spanish international was stuck in the middle of an embarassing situation after he was given a night out by coach Vicente Del Bosque following Spain’s 2-0 victory over Slovakia in the European Championship qualifiers. But the Catalan centre back didn’t have quite the peaceful ending that he would have wanted as he was captured running towards a van as the gathered mass revoked him.

Pique hasn’t been enduring the best of times in his home soil after the defender was booed by his own fans during the entirerity of the Spain-Slovakia game. The former Manchester United man’s recent jibes at Real Madrid during his club’s treble-winning campaign have offended the fans in the capital as it seems.

It has also been said that some fans disapprove of his support for a referendum on Catalan independence and want him excluded from the Spain team on those grounds.

However, coach Del Bosque has hit out at the boo boys and has labelled it as disgraceful. Talking to radio station Cadena Cope, he said, "This does not benefit us. He wants the national team to work well, and he has my esteem."

"It is unpleasant. I find it disgraceful that a player of the national team is being booed, and I hope this doesn't happen again."

His former Barcelona teammates came to his defense as Pedro and Jordi Alba also weighed in their thoughts on the 28-year-old getting jeered by fans. Pedro said he believed Pique was dealing with the hostility well, adding: "The truth is I don't believe the situation is affecting him. Against Slovakia he played a very good game."

While Alba said, “It doesn’t seem right. He's a national team player who has always shown commitment.

"He has always said that he feels deeply about what it means to wear the Spain shirt, and he's always given everything.

"There are always going to be different opinions but I don't like it at all -- I don't want to see a teammate whistled," he added.
