FIFA U-17 World Cup - Nicolai Adam: We will not be an embarrassment to the nation

Adam confident that Indian colts will deliver

Nicolai Adam has been handed over the all-important task of training and preparing the Indian youngsters for the upcoming U-17 World Cup in 2017. The former Azerbaijan coach was amongst the attendee for the grand event held in the capital to mark the opening of the FIFA U-17 World Cup and speaking to the press, the German added that he is confident that his side will work hard and will not be easy targets for any team in two year’s time.

“An embarrassment is to run away and we will not do that. I guarantee a team that will be hard to beat. Maybe we will lose 6-0 but we will not be an embarrassment to the nation,” Adam said.

The former development head of Germany added that the scouting is going according to the plans, but the state association’s delay is causing a lot of problems. He also mentioned that the players will come and go at any point depending on the scouting.

“There is always room for new players to come in.”

“It all depends on state associations and you need to ask this question to the states when they are ready. Once the stage 2 is done then we are ready to go ahead. We have a team ready that played in the Asian qualifiers, and we did well. The door is open, we will always look for players,” he added.

Adam also mentioned that his side are not at all the favourites, but they will make their oppositions work hard.

“It will be a tough tournament. We are not the favourites. We have just come from Chile and the level is incredible. To make it out of the groups you need 4 points. 3-4 Asian teams made it out of the group stages and even NZ made it. So there are upsets in these tournaments. It will be tough, but I believe in my team, staff and myself. We will do our job step by step.”

“We will host the AFC Championships next year and we qualified for the tournament on merit following our results in Iran. Our next goal is to make the semi's of AFC Championships through which we can qualify for the WC on merit,” he concluded.
