Gary Neville disappointed in United’s performance against Everton

Gary Neville ripped Manchester United apart for their ‘toothless’ performance against Everton on Sunday. United recently have had a horrible run of results of late at Goodison Park, losing 2-0 last year under David Moyes, and 3-0 this year under Louis van Gaal.

Everton’s win though has given vague hopes for Liverpool to finish above United in the top four. Van Gaal claimed that his players were lacking motivation during the warm-up, while defender Chris Smalling claimed that the team as a whole ‘lacked aggression’.

The 40-year old Neville saw the entire match from the stadium and was disgusted by United’s performance. In his Sky Sports podcast, Neville said: "United were toothless, and that is being kind.

"I didn’t really see them try and dribble past a player, make any forward runs. At times they were not getting enough men in the box and the final pass was poor. It is the worst I have seen United play for five or six weeks."

Carrick was badly missed: Neville

Neville mentioned the stability that Michael Carrick brought to the team, and said that without him United returned the pedestrian football they had been showcasing for the majority of this season.

“When Michael Carrick doesn’t play, their record without him shows he is missed. It is not just the control and composure, but it is his forward passes, he just moves the ball forward into good areas quickly.”

“When United won the ball back today they didn’t get the ball forward quick enough. Michael Carrick does that. Even if it is only a 10-yard pass, he gets the move moving in the right way. They miss him badly, they really do. It is no coincidence they have lost the last two games without him."
