In a tense final, Germany defeated Portugal 1-0 to win the U19 Euro title in Budapest, Hungary.

This title comes in the same month the senior squad won the FIFA World Cup. This is their second U19 Euro title after they won it back in 2008 – the last time they qualified for the tournament.

Midfielder Hany Mukhtar scored the winner in the first half in the 39th minute from near the goal line. Germany had dominated the opening stages of the game with a tight defence.

“The team won the title and I played my part," said Mukhtar after the game.

Coach Marcus Sorg was over the moon with the result: “We are unbelievably happy,”

“The boys earned this title and never gave up. I am really proud to be the coach of this team.”

Germany coach Joachim Loew also praised the team after they won the title.

“Many congratulations to everyone who who was part of this success,” he said.

“The team had a terrific tournament. The European Championship showed that German football can look forward to new great talent.”
