Accra, Dec 23 (IANS) Players of Ghana's senior national female football team have hit the streets here to demand payment of outstanding bonuses.

The Thursday protest was intended to compel the Sports Ministry to honour its promises after the team finished third at the 2016 Africa Women's Championship in Cameroon, reports Xinhua agency.

The players are owed several thousands of US dollars in bonuses.

Brandishing placards, some of which "We need our money", "Stop the discrimination", and "Honour your heroes", the female players marched to the offices of the Ministry of Youth and Sports to meet the minister, Edwin Nii Lantey Vanderpuye.

Last year, Ghana's men's football team skipper Asamoah Gyan came to the rescue of the ladies when he donated $10,000 to them after he was made aware of the financial difficulties facing the team.
