David Moyes may have got a lot of flak during (and after) his tenure at Manchester United during the 2013/14 season. But he’s the one who will be laughing all the way to the bank as he cashes in his compensation cheque.
The club is expected to announce its finances to club investors and it is believed that Moyes cost the club a total of £50 million!
Moyes was sacked in April, immediately after the club failed to qualify for the Champions League – something that made the club miss out on a guaranteed £35 million.
The club eventually finished seventh which ensured they lost another £8.5 million and even failed to qualify for the Europa League.
When you also add his salary of £3.5 million and the compensation package he received after getting the sack. Combined with the salaries and compensation packages for his staff which included Steve Round, Jimmy Lumsden, Chris Woods and Phil Neville, the entire amount in wages comes up to £7 million.
Manchester United not in trouble financially
However, the United hierarchy have assured shareholders that the loss of Champions League football will not hurt the club financially.
Having recently signed a £53m-a-year shirt sponsorship deal with Chevrolet and a £75m-a-year deal with Adidas set to kick in next season, the club will not be short of money to spend.
The Red Devils have already spent in excess of £150m in transfers this summer, getting in the likes of Luke Shaw, Ander herrera, Marcos Rojo, Angel Di Maria, Daley Blind and Radamel Falcao.
