I-League: Mohun Bagan confirm the signing of Balwant Singh

2014 FPAI Indian player of the year Balwant Singh has joined Mohun Bagan

Kolkata giants Mohun Bagan confirmed the signing of Balwant Singh on Saturday. The striker had been on Mohun Bagan’s radar since the end of last season and has finally completed his move to the Kolkata club after getting released from Churchill Brothers.

27-year-old Balwant had a remarkable campaign last season as he scored 17 goals in all competitions. Balwant scored ten times in the I-League including the winner against Salgaocar on the last day of the season that saw Churchill avoid the drop.

Balwant scored four goals to help Churchill Brothers win the Federation Cup and netted thrice in their run to the AFC Cup round of 16. The Punjabi lad also made his international debut back in March as he came on as a substitute in the 2-2 draw with Bangladesh.

But Churchill Brothers’ inability to get the national license to play in the I-League made Balwant, who won the 2014 FPAI Indian player of the year accolade, a target of several clubs and Mohun Bagan cashed in.

Balwant is the third forward to join Mohun Bagan this summer following the signings of Jeje Lalpekhlua and former Cameroon striker Pierre Boya.

Nigerian central defender Fatai Adisa Alao has been the other foreign recruit with Japanse Katsumi Yusa retained from last season. The Mariners are close to signing Haiti playmaker Sony Norde as their fourth foreigner for the 2014-15 campaign.
