I-League: Shillong Lajong FC take on Mohun Bagan tomorrow

Shillong Lajong FC will take on Mohun Bagan AC in the I-League at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Shillong tomorrow afternoon at 5:30pm.

Thangboi Singto’s side will look to continue their good run after earning their first home win this season. Shillong Lajong showed a brilliant display while beating Mohammedan Sporting Club in their last home match banking on Uilliams’ two goal brace.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference today, Thangboi Singto said, “It was a great win, three points and chapter closed. Tomorrow will be difficult against Mohun Bagan and we will try to get a good result.”

The Mohun Bagan coach Karim Bencharifa was all praise for his defender and Shillong lad Aibor Khongjee who got his first call-up to the Indian national team. Karim said, “I’ve worked with Aibor for almost a year and he is very educated, strong and I’m happy to see him in the national team.”

The Kolkata giants had a poor start to their campaign but are finding their form having registered two wins and a draw in the past three games. Speaking on their poor start Karim said, “Mohun Bagan is a new team with new players and combination takes time. The schedule was also not easy but we are setting, seven points out of nine in (last) three games.”

The home side are still not sure about the availability of their key players in tomorrow’s encounter as Japanese midfielder Taisuke Matsugae and Trinidad striker Cornell Glen are still doubtful. Mohun Bagan also have their fare share of injury setbacks including all-time I-League leading scorer Odafe Onyeka Okolie who has been out since the start of the campaign.

Shillong Lajong will look for a repeat of the same fixture from last season when the hosts won 2-0 with goals from Boithang Haokip and Lalramluaha Hmar.

Also present at the pre-match press conference was Lajong midfielder Milan Singh who is “expecting a good crowd tomorrow”. In his closing statement, Karim Bencherifa said that he “hopes for a good performance from the referee” so as to bring the game up to a “good standard”.

Shillong Lajong FC are placed sixth in the table with 12 points from eight games and Mohun Bagan are seventh with nine points from seven games.
