ISL: Always had the desire to go to India – FC Pune City’s David Trezeguet

David Trezeguet will play for FC Pune City in the ISL

France World Cup winner David Trezeguet will be one of the marquee foreigners in the inaugural season of the Indian Super League as he has been roped in by FC Pune City.

Although some of the marquee foreigners of the ISL are retired stars, Trezeguet is yet to hang up his boots and was even playing in the top tier of Argentina last season.

“India is a special country in so many ways and I have always had the desire to go to India. Of all the possibilities that I had, the Indian opportunity was the one I enthusiastically wanted and not just for football reasons,” Trezeguet was quoted saying by Sky Sports.

The 36-year-old stated that the huge population of India was a big factor in convincing him to accept the offer from Pune.

“When I learned about this project and the role I would play in building a dream, not just for one, but for one billion people, my heart just said ‘I have to do this’.

“For me the role and the connection with my heart is the most important thing. This is a new step for me and an important experience in my career – now it’s time to give something back,” the former Juventus and Monaco star said.

Trezeguet’s former international teammate and fellow World Cup winner Robert Pires will also be one of the marquee players. Pires set up Trezeguet’s golden goal winner against Italy at the Euro 2000 final and the striker is looking forward to be a part of the new Indian league along with his compatriot.

“For both me and Robert Pires it will be another meeting in this new experience. He is a great person and I consider him a great personal friend,” he said.
